External universal car jump start battery: JX18B

Here's my newest toy: the JX18B "68800 mAh" external charger cum car jump starter.

Real Capacity?

It is advertised as 68 Ah (sic!), which can't be true.

Why not?

This is what a modern 60 Ah lithium car starter battery, produced by the somewhat famous A123 company, looks like:
A123's real 60 Ah

It weighs 10 kg though and measures 278 x 175 x 190 mm, so it is way heavier and larger.

Here are the different likely capacities values for our JX18B baby:

7 Ah

Why? Let's compare the sizes of 6.2 Ah Fujitsu notebook battery with this one:

They weigh about the same, while size for size, we arrive at 7 Ah.

10 Ah

Now, the most enlightening discussion happens on YT, where they suggest the same value.
From a sellers's description thereof:
"This Emergency Jump starter can be made up to capacity, the real capacity of this jump starter actually is 9900mah. But the label will be marked with 50800mAh.Please know it in advance before your order. Thank you."
One YouTube tinkerer concurs:
I tore down one of these and yes, it does use a heatshrunk stack of li-pos to generate voltage close to 12V. The electronics are small and only used to produce stable 5/12/16/19V on USB/DC jack output, simple step-up boost converter like in most powerbanks. The jump-start plug goes directly from the cell and is not under control by any electronics - found out the hard way, when I made myself a power supply for car light bulbs out of that device only to find out that the cell stack went undervoltage down to 6V and lost most of it's capacity. And since we talk about how much energy is stored in that cell: not much. Best case scenario gives you 10.0 Ah at 12V, but the cell is quite poor quality, therefore when you push it hard it gives even less. The 50Ah description is the standard lie of these low-quality ebay/aliexpress products (technically you might be closer to 50Ah at lower voltage when you would hook up these cells in pararell, but that not how they are used there).

The following higher values are thrown around there, too:

12 Ah

Real life

And what do my test say?
Plugging in the bits

Let there be a 20 W light!

I connected a 12 V, 20 W lamp (the 30 W and above were too "heavy" for JX18B). The current (ampers) went from 1.6 A, quickly to 1.55 A and way down to 1.45 A, when the lamp turned off, and the battery meter showed no juice left. The experiment lasted 103 minutes only. (Yes, less than 2 hours).
Let's assume 1.5 A average current for ease of calculation. We arrive at:
1.5 A  * 103 min / 60 min =

2.6 Ah

Or , as 1.5 A * 12 V= 18 W , so:
18 W * 103 min / 60 min = 31 Wh

Kinda low, huh?

To test it further, I used a real-life scenario: the above-mentioned HP Pavilion notebook, running Heavy Load to arrive at a steady average 24 W discharge rate, connected to this external battery.  Do note that this configuration did not recharge the internal battery at any moment, as the third (signal) wire with the feedback info to the usual AC power adapter was missing in this configuration, so only the notebook itself was drawing down the power.

I used PassMark's Battery Monitor, which logged the (dis)charge rate to a CSV file. (To signal when the power switched back to the internal battery, I changed the control .BAT in the Batt Stat by adding my fav MP3 jingle thereto.)

Here is the graph of what happened:




JX18B Battery was connected at 9:59 and ran out of juice at exactly 11:13, so we get 74 minutes here.  Let see how it happened:


Let's do the maths:

24 W  * 74 min / 60 min = 29.6 Wh
which is equivalent to:

2.48 Ah !


It ties in with the 2.6 Ah measured above.





Now, let's entertain its geek uses:

Emergency car jump starter

It can even start the car, they say, but in practice it proved too weak [Update 2:} and it did "boot up" my Diesel VW Passat B5 on its own! The standard lead-acid car battery was disconnected, while JX18B did start her up 4 times in a row.

The trick may hide in the high ambient temperature (30 C degs here) and my waiting some seconds with the ignition switch turned, before cranking her up, so that the coils heat up. 

External notebook battery

My HP Pavilion internal battery (removable to an extent) is rated at 44 Wh (advertised as 48 Wh in HP's specs above for unknown, probably marketing reasons, while it is correctly specced as 43 Wh on Ebay), which allows it to run up to 5 h under regular usage: mostly reading and typing, around 8 W discharge rate.

Now, assuming 2.5 Ah capacity, as per the experiments above, then seemingly one has additional 3 h (three hours only) of notebook juice, assuming a -10W discharge rate, as measured by BatteryBar:

Listen to Rocksmith Guitar via A2DP

If you have not heard of Rocksmith Guitar, while trying to learn how to play an electric guitar, do buy it, just because:
 

Now, for a number of reasons, this otherwise nice program does not allow to set A2D2 output as default sound device.

This is what happens if you select your BT phones here in the Sound Cards settings:


We need to trick this and other programs. You can either select BT Phone Headset above (8kHz sampling, so it works), or the configuration below.

First, restore the default, non-virtual, hardware sound output:


Then go to the Recording tab.
Instead of setting for the default Rocksmith USB Recording Device:

Enable the Stereo Mix entry:
 (If you do not see it here, enable "Show hidden devices" in Device Manager first).

Then stream the input to your BT headphones, e.g. like this:


It is not perfect: expect a 200 ms lag on a 2.5 GHz notebook, on top of the lag due to the USB analog to digital converter (adjustable with Latency Buffer in Rocksmith Sound options: 2 works in my system) but it's better than the wire harness to your notebook and guitar together.

SDL Trados - Enter as "Confirm, go to Next Segment" key shortcut


Read this for the business case, aka the background: KB #3188 |  Assigning the Enter key as keyboard shortcut to confirming a segment does not appear to work

How to do it?
Open SDL Trados, Options, Shortcuts. Change Copy SourceToTarget to key F10, so that a <SettingsGroup Id="ShortcutsSettingsGroup"> is created in SDL XML options.

Locate UserSettings.xml, usually in C:\Users\[Username]\AppData\Roaming\SDL\SDL Trados Studio\11.0.0.0\UserSettings.xml

Paste this to the end thereof, overwriting the existing Shortcuts group:

It took two months to reach me (I suspect Polish customs at play....) but I love it already:

  1.  It is "plug and play" that is it detects the device inserted (USB) and starts to play it. No pressing other keys is necessary.
  2. It is stateful - as it remembers the track and position of the media device inserted. 
  3. Power supply is 12 V, which makes it pretty damn universal: even a cheapo wall charger, car battery or two pocket Li-Lios cells will do to fire it up in the street or so. 
  4. It even remembers the status quo upon "reboot" that is powering down and up! That is if you insert the same media and switch the amp on, it resumes play from the very position. Simple genius and exactly what I was looking for, as I do not like to fiddle with remote controls.

I will update it once I test the distortion, power, etc.

Using your Android as a second Windows monitor: fast refresh rate + free solution

Do you know that you probably carry a PC monitor in your pocket or backpack?

You may have heard of Android terminal clients connecting to a Windows (Unix, Mac, etc.) desktop server: the most popular are Microsoft Remote Desktop Client  2X Client, VNC, Teamviewer.

Yet do you know that you can connect your Android device (tablet or phone etc.) to the current Windows session so that it is treated as a second monitor?

This is what it looks like in Windows:

To enable it, you need any Android (preferably rooted) device, a USB cable connecting the Android device to your PC and Windows 7 or lower (sic!) operating system on the PC.

There are paid applications that do it, but after some modding, we can get the same (or even better) results for free.

It uses AirScreen, and Mirage video driver (no need to install these, they are included already):








  • Install the Airscreen PC server (version 2.6) on your Windows PC. (Do not run it yet.)
  • Delete the installation directory (C:\Program Files\Quickturn\AirScreen) and overwrite it with the patch from the package.
  • Check if the Mirage mirror video driver was correctly installed as a virtual display adapter:

  • (This driver is key to the trick. Alas, it will not work in Windows 8.)


  • Install a VNC viewer (take your pick, I prefer AndroidVNC) in your Android device or use the default AirScreen client app (not recommended).
  • Connect your Android device with the PC via the USB cable. 
  • Enable USB Tethering on Android. (You may want to install the CM-AutoTether.apk to automate it if your device is rooted.)
  • Make sure that your PC discovered your Android device and the right drivers have been installed. (The ADB daemon running is not needed here in fact, just the tethering driver.) 






  • Find your tethered PC client's IP for the USB connection: use ipconfig or hover over the AirScreen server in the tray to display the IPs.

  • Your IP will probably be within the 192.168.42.* range.

    You may check the connectivity to PC from Android - use the IP Tools, ping or a similar package.

    Detect and enable dual monitor in the PC's Control Panel. 
    The "Display device on: VGA" is in fact your virtual mirror Mirage driver.




  • Connect your VNC viewer to http://[your-pc-ip]:7654


  • Tips:
  • Install the fullscreen mode root application.
  • Remap the control key: Left hold -> Android Menu. 
  • Install the AutoTether app
  • Install Rotate Display (or similar), rotate to Reverse Portrait, and rotate to Portrait on the PC. Then physically rotate your Android counterclockwise.
  • Check this animated gif on your new Android monitor window, to test the refresh rate:

  • Caveats:
    • Create system restore points or backups, to roll back if needed. You have been warned.
    • When playing with it, do not change the main monitor to the AirScreen Android virtual one! Windows will mess things up, even upon reboot. If you get lost, to restore: either drag the control panel window by Alt+Space, M, and arrows to the visible area, or restore Windows to the previous state by e.g. the system restore point.
    • Use the Windows key+P combination to switch the monitors, if you cannot see your the display control window on the PC.
